Andries Bezuidenhout is a leading Afrikaans singer-songwriter. In other lives he is a published poet and a sociologist at the University of the Witwatersrand.
As solo artist, he recorded two albums, Insomniak se droomalmanak (2003) and Bleek Berus (2009). Journalist Fred de Vries called Insomniak se Droomalmanak “a proper follow-up to Koos Kombuis’ seminal ‘Niemandsland’.” He wrote: “On ‘Insomniak se Droomalmanak’ singer/songwriter Andries Bezuidenhout has taken Koos’ knack for melody and bittersweet Afrikaans lyrics and catapulted them into the new millennium.”
Paul Blom (Cape Argues) described the CD as follows: “Andries Bezuidenhout subscribes to the introspective, thought-provoking school of minimalist philosophical expression, commenting on life and the world, from the little things to the bigger picture.” Commenting on lyrical themes, he wrote: “The poetic themes of the dream world, the waking dream, sleepwalking existence and the reflection of South African city and suburban life, changes, angst and being white these days may be a heady mix, but it works.”
Apart from solo musician, Andries is also known as Roof from the Brixton Moord & Roof Orkes (Brixton Murder and Robbery Band), a band that has been described as “cult Afrikaans rock outsiders” (Miles Keylock), “not for sissies” (Brian Curren), and “music that will make you feel better the morning after you did something reprehensible” (Toast Coetzer). The band released two CD’s, Spergebied (2002) and Terug in skubbe (2004).
His debut book of poetry Retoer was published by Protea Boekhuis at the end of 2007. He writes a column for the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport every second week and maintains a poetry blog on versindaba.co.za.
During the day Andries works as a sociologist at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He lives in Johannesburg and Trompsburg.
